What To Do In an Emergency?

FIRE

  • Do not store flammable liquids, bottled gas or paraffin in your home
  • Always keep fire doors shut, and keep exit routes clear
  • Residents should not install gates on balconies to section off the landings outside their properties
  • Do not overload sockets
  • Never use the lift in the event of a fire
  • In the event of fire call 999

GAS

  • Make sure you know where your gas meter and main supply tap are.
  • If you think you may have a gas leak or can smell gas you should:
    • Open the doors and windows
    • Switch off all gas appliances
    • Do not use matches, candles or smoke.
    • Do not turn electrical switches on or off
    • If you can still smell gas, turn the gas supply off at the mains and phone GAS EMERGENCY on 0800 111 999

ELECTRICITY

If you have no electricity

  • Check to see if other properties are affected. If they are, call UK Power on 0845 6000 102
  • If only your home is affected, check the main fuse box to see whether the trip switch has turned your supply off. It does this to protect you from getting injured by a faulty appliance. Once you’ve identified and disconnected the appliance you can turn the trip switch back on.

WATER

If you have a leak or flood

  • Make sure you know where your mains stopcock is. It’s usually under the sink in the kitchen or bathroom. Turn the water off and either report a repair or call a plumber.
